About Capoeira

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian Martial art that was created by enslaved Africans in Brazil. Capoeira was their way of maintaining a connection to their African culture which was forbidden to pursue as slaves. Because practicing any martial art or self-defense was forbidden for the slaves,  Capoeira appears to an outsider as a dance/game. But to those who are practicing, it is clearly an efficient and creative martial art.

For many years Capoeira was forbidden by law but over the years became the official Brazilian martial art and one of the most popular practices in Brazil.

Over the years Capoeira evolved in relation and reaction to the changes of each era. It combines movement and ideas from different martial arts, Afro-Brazilian music, Dance-like steps, and acrobatics. There are kicks, takedowns, flips, and rhythm.

Capoeira continues to evolve and change all the time and has many different styles.

About Alma do Jogo

Alma Do Jogo, means, “The spirit/soul of the game”. A Capoeira match is called a “game”. Capoeira is viewed by Capoeiristas as a game. We are always in the search of the true spirit of our art.

At Alma Do Jogo we see each student as a whole and encourage them to explore and develop what makes them unique. The class is a place to grow as athletes, and as humans, and to enjoy great interactions with others.

We teach by role-modeling, positive communication, games, and challenges.

Students are encouraged to explore leadership roles within the group and the class.

Because Capoeira is so diverse, so are our teaching methods. We use different ideas, techniques, and styles that we have developed over many years of teaching children, teens, and adults.

Alma Do Jogo is a democratic Capoeira organization. We do not use cords (belts) or ranks. Each and every student is valued and respected.

The adult group makes joint decisions about the group and its direction, and the more experienced Capoeiristas are encouraged to lead by example and not by hierarchy.

Training Capoeira

Capoeira has many different aspects to develop, explore, and practice.

  • Self-defense
  • Music
  • Acrobatics
  • Style
  • Flow
  • Culture

To achieve all of the above, Capoeiristas must develop strength, speed, flexibility, balance, focus, self-discipline, and rhythm.
